Appeal for son to make contact
The Irish News
August 25, 2005
The
mother of a US backpacker missing for six weeks in Ireland yesterday
made an emotional appeal for him to contact home.
New
Jersey native Stephen Joseph Devaris (32) vanished while travelling
in Co Clare and Co Galway last month.
His
passport and mobile phone were found washed up on a west Clare
beach on July 13, five days after his arrival in Ireland.
Mr
Devaris's mother Anne appealed on regional radio for her son to
contact home.
"He
had been out of work for a while and I think he may have got discouraged.
"But
whatever situation he's in or whatever he's feeling, it can all
be straightened out," she said.
Mrs
Devaris, whose parents are from Ireland also thanked gardai and
the public for their help in the search so far.
Gardai
say they're very concerned about Mr Devaris's whereabouts but
have no evidence yet to suspect foul play.
"Public
appeals with the man's description have been put out and enquiries
are ongoing," Sergeant Brian Howard said.
"Naturally
we are very worried as there has been nothing now for a number
of weeks."
Mr
Devaris is described as six feet tall, of average build with brown
hair, with a beard and has a distinctive bird tattoo on his left
arm.
The
last sighting of Mr Devaris was in a pub in Inagh, Co Clare.
